Bungie announced today they are ceasing development on Destiny 2 and this June's update will be the last content for the game.
The writings been on the wall for a while now with plummeting player numbers (although still better than marathon:D) I've not played since the odd starwars themed update and most of the people who used to cover the game moved to arc raiders or some other live service.
Bit of a shame but I guess given the 768 million dollar impairment and the layoffs gutting the teams there it was not doing well for sony.
Think they are sticking with marathon although they're learning from arc raiders that not everyone likes hardcore full loot pvp and are going to be adding some partial pve modes with season 2 and later a full pve mode
Might improve the player numbers although how long Bungie exist as a separate entity given how badly they've shit the bed in recent years I wonder.
Destiny 2 will still be playable but on life support from here on which I suspect will mean the already low numbers will just dwindle.
Comments
There's been some comments from bungie to suggest there is a destiny 3 in the pipe which seems unlikely at this stage. We know they're not currently working on a sequel they had some project a while back that was a destiny follow on although not a direct sequel but it was cancelled a few years back when they decided to double down on marathon and canceled the 6 or 7 other projects they were somehow working on all at the same time.
So even if they started now it would be at least 5 years out given how long these projects take and they are greatly diminished after the last two rounds of layoffs I guess cancelling the life support they did have for destiny 2 frees up some dev capacity so maybe.
Still the internal rumors suggest another round of layoffs is in the pipe and with them already struggling to run Destiny 2 on lifesupport and marathon at the same time and every release was riddled with bugs and exploits a smaller team seems like they might struggle there.
