SOE don't hold back from fucking about with Planetside 2! They really do get stuck in with both feet and I think it is keeping the game fresh for me. Many of the tweaks are small and welcome (balance, weapons), some I don't give a monkeys about but loads of people seem to buy them (hats, camo, model mods for vehicles) but some are big and my god, are they good.
Where can I get a good fight?
In the Battlefields, there was a lot of running about, the only purpose being, well, running about. With maps that are largely empty, the running about was annoying. Idiots would fuck off with the helicopters without picking people up and you'd die randomly to then spawn and run. And run. etc. And then ghost-capping. BORING.
PS2 is much, much bigger but because of the lattice system (which is a non-directed graph of capture points), you have a feeling which way the fight is going to go. They've just added it to my favourite continent (Amerish) and it's brilliant fun there now. You still get battle lines. You still can have 3 way fights (if you choose to fight in them) but the intensity is much better. Also, if you know where your platoon is going next, you can sneak behind enemy lines as an invisible infiltrator and hack vehicle spawn terminals, blow stuff up and make things more tricky for defending forces.
Been playing different things
Until now, I've been a medic. Doctor! As such, I've done a lot more dying than killing and have always kept myself in the thick of the squad. It's adrenaline pumping stuff. More recently, I've been bouncing between classes more. Sure, they're not as spec'd as my medic but the style of play is entirely different. We attacked a facility that had been updated in a recent patch - adding pinch points, removing others, changing sight lines etc. Tweaking on the infinitesimal scale. I'd found a little spot to bounce in and out of as a jet-pack'd light assault and racked up 5 kills before stupidly giving myself away. As light assault you can get up high where people aren't expecting.
Also, rather than just legging it in to get the Unreal-Tournament-esque-first-person-to-shoot-wins, I've been looking at where others run and trying different ways to attack. As they change the map layout so often, you HAVE to keep rethinking everything. Which is wonderful.
Zergs and levels
If you see an enemy Zerg, either mount a good defence if there are enough of you or fight somewhere else. Simple as that. Zergs are amazing to behold but you're going to die. Being part of a Zerg is a bit boring, like spawn camping but fortunately my Outfit don't go in for that. If the line of attack we're following gets overpopulated, we move on.
I've also noticed now that I'm a heady rank of 38 that not taking care is the reason you die - not others being overpowered. Not thinking about what you're doing is going to get you killed, not the bigger gun or an airstrike. I sheltered by a rock while a gunship hunted me down (I shot the gunner when he got out to repair, the pilot took offence to this). I took the odd hit but the gunship hung about too long and was taken out by anti-air equipped tanks.
So, yeah, still really liking Planetside 2 and now that I am being more careful, I am dying a lot less!
