All Change

So quite out of the blue I find myself with a new job.

What happened was the company I currently work for sold off their UK design center (which was originally the company I first joined years and years ago that got bought out a few years back) to another company who make things like SSD’s as part of that I got moved over.

I was offered the choice not to move but since that would leave me supporting basically old products with no new stuff coming out (since all of that was what was sold to the new outfit) I couldn’t see much of a future in that role. I would be pretty secure for a while till they EOL’d the chips and then that would likely be it.

Anyway the upshot of this is finding myself with a new job at a new company without expecting it and without any details. I don’t know what I’ll be doing, who I’ll be working for, or really anything about how the transition will go.

It’s all a little intimidating. Long term it feels like the right move but right now there are so many unknowns it’s a bit much. At least I know I’m still employed and the new company are based nearby so I don’t have to move but at the moment that’s really all I know.

I’ll let you all know how it pans out.

I can see why it's a bit of a shocker but at the same time you've been surviving in a foreign country without a good supply of Jaffa cakes for ages now, I am sure you can take this in your stride.

The only other bit of advice I can offer is have an exit plan. If you have a plan in your mind of what you might do next then it is a lot easier to to make a rational decision if you're not happy. The plan might include simply writing down all the things you need to do if you decide to leave, it might include some simple CV updating (or writing a new one) or a few jobsite searches.

The first thing I did was secure a local supply of Jaffa cakes

yeah an exit plan would depend greatly on whether I could stay my current visa only allows me to work for one specific employer (and not the new one at that so that's something they will have to work out soon) which means if I quit or get fired I have to leave the country on the spot

Currently my preference is to stay out here I've just about got this place figured out

As part of this I may be changing over to a different visa type that would give me more flexibility but as with much of this I have more questions than answers.

It's going to be a bit strange in the office while this shakes out as I'm the only one in the US moving to the new place. My boss is the only one in a similar position since the UK bit is being moved over in one piece and likely will keep roughly the same internal structure bar the name on the door.

One of the other chaps I vaguely work with seemed to want to move over too and he phrased it like "it's like you're going to heaven and I'm left here in hell" not really sure what to respond to that poor chap he moved here from Taiwan about the same time as me moving from the UK
