Games that ruin other games by being different

"I can't play online Risk anymore." said a new Chom Isis player "I just assume everyone is not trustworthy - which makes winning really hard. Chom Isis has ruined my enjoyment of Risk."

I was an interesting comment I discarded but then I read the review by RPS Battfield Bad Company 2. It starts thus:

I was playing Borderlands yesterday, and an enemy dived behind some cover. Naturally, I pull out a missile launcher and squeeze off a rocket. As the smoke clears, something strange happens. The cover is still there, untouched by the explosive death I spat at it. It stands, defiant and unmarked. This is what Battlefield: Bad Company 2 does to you. It ruins everything else.

This got me thinking. There have been a few games in the past that have ruined others. Battlefield 1942's game modes ruined Quake multiplayer. BF1942 had shown me that there was more to multiplayer than just death match. The same goes for Half Life ruining the 'stories' that most other games had. The Unreal story line look pathetically thin compared to HL. It sounds like BFBC2 does the same thing to shooters - by having destructible environments make a real difference. How many games have been ruined by a sodding sniper hiding behind an invisible crop of flowers.

Can you think of any game that has ruined other games for you?

Nothing springs to mind on the game front... Although The Wire ruined every other cop show for me.

Tribes:Vengeance. Every game should have ski'ing. Play Tribes for half an hour, and then spend 2 weeks trying to ski in every game ever.

Unreal...no reload button. Bliss.

Tribes is a very good example. I wish every game had skiing. It made so much sense. Although in BF:1942, it would add a slightly unrealistic wacky element!

... And improve BF:1942 beyond my wildest dreams... ;)

L4D2 has probably ruined L4D for me. I can't imagine taking on a zombie horde without a melee weapon these days.

I'm the other way round...I think the melee weapons are too powerful against hordes, and need some kind of limiter (in the same way as swinging the butt of your weapon is limited after a while).

Battlefield 2142 - The squad system was awesome and I've wanted it in every large scale fps since.

Battlefield Vietnam - All games should now be set in Vietnam.

Jeepathon - The CS map that first introduced us to vehicles in FPS.

Battlefield 1942 (one map) - all games should have rammable aircraft carriers. Even ones where they don't make sense (especially ones where they don't in fact)

Battlefield Vietnam + Squad system + character advancement has been something I've dreamt about. Less gunships and more transport helicopters. And rammable aircraft carriers. What more could you want?

No character development...

Apparently skiing and katanas would round it off.

Although Skiing and Katanas could be a game in itself.

Dear EA,
I was a huge fan of your Battlefield Vietnam game. I am also a fan of the squad based system in Battlefield 2142. I also like skiing in games. And katanas. We're not sure if we like character advancement, so leave that out.

Please can you make a new version of BFV with skiing, katanas and squad based system. If you fucking dare to fiddle with the helicopter dynamics, I'll personally cut your fucking jacobs off.

Love and hugs,

Rob
