And this is why I hate New Scientist. If you follow the link to the paper, you find that their conclusion is a little less strongly worded than the NS write-up:
Regular coffee consumption was not associated with an increased mortality rate in either men or women. The possibility of a modest benefit of coffee consumption on all-cause and CVD mortality needs to be further investigated.
(It'll be six months before the whole paper is available for free, but some information, including the conclusion is already posted.)
