I was reminded of Ghostbusters when I read this story. Aparently the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN might trigger the end of the world. My favourite quote is:
The thousands of physicists working the project maintain that there is nothing to suggest the LHC is unsafe. CERN officials also wonder, as do we, how a district court in Hawaii has jurisdiction over an intergovernmental organization in Europe?
The end of existence might affect everyone, no?

Well if we're all gonna die we might as well die at the hands of some mad scientists. ;)
The joy of this story is that there aren't any of your architypal mad scientists. They're all pretty sane. Bearded and calm. You'd have to be to secure £4 billion from the joint european governments.
That's as maybe but the sentence:
"Well if we're all gonna die we might as well die at the hands of some sane, calm scientists"
Just doesn't work as well for me, I need cackling lunatics otherwise I just don't think the demise of everything is worth it.
"They're all pretty sane. Bearded and calm. You'd have to be to secure £4 billion from the joint european governments."
Or
They had developed a doomsday device that could destroy the world and set a ransom of £4 billion.
I dunno, that sounds like a pretty rational and well thought out plan to me.
Do they have a newsletter I can subscribe to?
"Well if we're all gonna die we might as well die at the hands of some sane, calm scientists"
That sounds scarier to me. That means they'd actually chose to kill us all...
