Firstly contrats on your content spam today Rob! Been looking a little thin on here for a while. Back on topic...
Steam has always been pretty good to me, it lets me talk to Evil and kill significant numbers of Germans. The only thing it seems to demand in return is that I ignore a few adverts every so often. My question really is thus, what's the beef everyone has with Steam? It's not perfect but then what is?

[OT] It's amazing how much EMW brings to the site in terms of cool links. More power to him. :)
I'd still buy the games with Steam, I won't go as far as the spitting-evil Pete suffers from... Here's a few things that annoy me.
1. They collect data. Why should playing different games FORCE me to submit data. I don't have a choice with Steam to play disconnected. It's a small thing in this way but I don't like the way it's going.
2. You're tied into Steam. You can't say no, you have to have it. I like to say no to things I don't like.
3. Third party applications are out in the cold. It's impossible to integrate. I don't like that at all. I much prefer open APIs so that other, more intelligent people with spare time on their hands can create lovely mashups. Crossfire and so on are good apps and can still be used but why bother when there is a feature lite version built into the game.
It's good in so many ways - especially for indie developers (garry's mod is an excellent example), I think there should have been some more of a philanthropic approach to steam - something they've not done.
