it looked like it was going the Dvd +/- R for a while but BluRay just managed to pay off more studios and Toshiba seem to have called time on it. Gives sony a reason to flog the ps3 again which they still need.
Guess all those people that got HD-DVD players are going to be pissed off.

None of the HD-DVD figures would ever include the PS3 as a Blu Ray player, which is mad because the sorts of HD-toting tech nutters will buy a PS3 for just that!
It's Betamax all over again, except the two technologies are much closer. Betamax was much much better than VHS.

I bet their figures would include the 360's HDDVD add on. Last time I was over at Tim/Tiny's he was boasting about having one of those. I expect doesn't look like such a good deal now.
They were going to be one format for a while except neither side would agree to changes to unify them, it was complete madness that they didn't make one format since the only people that really catch it in the neck are the consumers who backed the loosing side. Toshiba will loose a little while they retool for bluray but it's not going to long term ruin them.

This is the first time Sony has won a propriety format war. Betamax (vs VHS), minidisc (vs MP3/CD), UMD (vs cart/DVD), Memory Stick Duo (vs SD)...Also the ATRAC music format (vs MP3).
they are probably quite relieved to finally have won something
//added - Slight retraction. 3.5" floppy discs were Sony too...they were fairly commonplace I suppose...
