So I'm currently signed off work, and to avoid boredom watching a lot of Youtube.
This video brought back lots of memories of Highmead Close, early Fishcon's, and when I used to build my own PC's. I recognised an awful lot of the parts he used.
Going back even further, my first "gaming machine" was a VooDoo2 equipped machine which I played Unreal and Unreal Tournament on an awful lot...there's also a lot of hardware on this on I remember sort-of fondly.

Cool!
Why are you signed off?
Something interesting wrong with my lower back, which is also causing sciatic pain. Basically crippled, however I'm on enough painkillers right now that I can manage. Got an appointment with a spine consultant next week, so it's pain management until then. Welcome to old age I guess... I'm not allowed to sit (currently theory is that driving has triggered it), so sofa and floor bound.
Spending my time watching Youtube, playing on the Switch and trying not to shop (currently not buying a DJI Spark for holiday/honeymoon videos...waiting on a price point of £300)
Oh mate, I'm very sorry to hear that. You poor fucker.
DJI Spark is an excellent piece of kit. Seen a complete muppet fly one with ease. You'll have no probs. Keep posting up on here, tis good to see old tech make an outing.
I think the Spark hits the price point/usage I'm looking at, assuming I can get it for ~£300 (which is the lowest price Amazon have had in the last 3-4 months...currently £350). I'm most interested in the controller-free modes and pre-set flight patterns. The Air is _slightly_ better, but effectively twice the price.
My visit to the GP yesterday has put me in a much better position. Got enough painkillers to keep me comfortable, and because the human body is fucked up, I can cycle to some extent (1-2 hours max seems to be the limit), but can barely walk 20-30m or stand for more than about a minute.
Spark is a great piece of kit. I'd get one and there's always a little bit of flying involved, don't believe the auto modes too much!
Are you going to get wheels fitted?
I've been seeing a lot of rumors about the mavic 2 being on the horizon so maybe that will get them to lower the spark's price a tad
Yes, I should definitely wait.
To be fair, if I was going to get it it needed to be before September (stag do, then wedding and honeymoon), and no-one is going to release new tech mid-summer.
Just waiting for it all to charge, and then I'm totally terrorising the cat. Or crashing. Possibly/probably both. #nospacialawareness
LOL!
Get the NATS app from your phone. Read the drone code. How much does it weigh?
I have literally no idea what you've typed.
So far it's charging, connecting everything (phone -> controller -> drone) and firmware updates all round. Done a brief fly around my room, however the collision detection finds it all a little cramped.
Put NATS Drone into Google play. Download it. Have a play with it. Shows you danger areas. Then find the drone code online. The rules are about to go full fascist and there's jail sentences for fucking it up.
I think we have very different use cases. A quick look at the drone code suggests there is very little applicable to me. Maybe the residences thing, but then it's noisy enough that I won't be using it in the back garden.
I mainly plan to use it abroad, the software manages the no-fly zones around airfields, and on phone connectivity (how I'll mainly be using it) operation is 80m (gesture is 20m), so getting it to 120m will be a challenge. No point flying it that high anyway, as it's use is as a camera platform, and there is fuck all that high to capture...
Cool.
Do you know the weight? Is it over 250g?
No idea. Variable probably, based on what is/isn't bolted onto it.
If this is about the registration/safety training...again the app enforces that before it lets you take off. You can't use it without linking it to the app, and going through the process (register, answer common sense questions etc etc). Also, every single flight you do is logged on the DJI website (full flight logs), so I suspect they've taken care of all the legalities that way. They've sort of gamified the flight logs, so you earn "levels" the more you fly.
I was actually looking at a way of converting the logs into video data overlays...similar to what you can do with Garmin logs and feeding it through Dashware.
oooooh, well impressed with the logs. I think the weight is maximum AUW. If it's over 250g, you'll need to register at some point and then do a brief online training course. I doubt the DJI will be enough because they're still writing it. It'll probably take 15 minutes and be bleeding obvious. I'm keeping an eye on it.
Do you have Public Liability Insurance? It's about £20 a year and will protect you if you fly into anything. I use FPVUK https://www.fpvuk.org/
Given what the DJI process is, I suspect they have built it so that any official stuff can be plugged right in. It consisted of a capture of owner (name/address linked to serial number of the drone) then about 10 multi-choice questions. It would make perfect sense that they would do that, as then if/when regulation comes in they can go to the main retailer (Amazon) and say "you can just sell ours still, we'll handle the paperwork". The government have been putting pressure on manufacturers for a while, and it's far better doing it that way than self-registration, especially with the app-linked type of drone. My guess would be that if/when registration beomes a thing, DJI will just enforce it via the app, and as they already have your details, it could just be a popup.
I won't be bothering with insurance...partly as I really won't be using it that often, and having had a test fly around the house today with an SD card in, I'll clearly be flying it very slowly, as that way you get the best images. About quarter stick movement in "safe" mode seems to get the best results. I think there is a tripod mode that I can use that should make it easier still...
