There was an interesting case recently along these lines where someone wanted to invalidate Google's trademark argueing that since people used to google/google it as a short hand for searching on the web it was a generic term like walkman or ... velcro
Where that fell down is while the use of say velcro can refer to any of the many hook and loop style non permanent fastening systems from different manufacturers when people say "google it" the specifically mean use google to search for something they don't mean use yahoo or ask jeeves or altavista or duckduckgo or something more obscure like Bing. So the case was turned down.
