Scrap Mechanic is getting a huge new update on the 7th of May. I remember that EMW said it was fun for what is what in a creative kind of way (can't find the post here, I assume it was verbally) but there wasn't much game yet. I think they have fixed that. Looks pretty good fun!

It does seem a cliche at this point for these survival games where enemies come at night. I liked the elements where it used it's unique features to create traps and mechanisms to destroy the waves of rogue machines I hope it leans into that a bit more as otherwise it's wasting a lot of what makes it a bit different. If they can devise ways to make a sort of tower defence game at night builder resource collector by day sort of thing I think it'd stand out as a unique game.
it does seem to have potential and maybe a place in our sng roster.

I think there's also "dungeon delving" from 2:06 toward the end. It looks like they're going through something pre-built to fight a boss right at the end.
I've been watching this game for a while (5 YEARS?!), hoping that there's a bit more content before picking it up and this is it. Felix might enjoy it too, so I think I'll be getting a copy or two.

This was pretty good fun it took a while to get somewhere with the parts we needed being so scarce (just unlucky with the RNG I think) but it felt like we were starting to make good progress with our hilariously janky and hard to steer mining drill on wheels.
It did feel like there was a lot of components we needed that we couldn't make and wasn't really harvestable in game as such needing to be found through luck which for a crafting survival feels a little bad. Perhaps the intention was to harvest that stuff from the waves of robots in the night which we were not yet getting into

Having played a little further with F yesterday, the next level of fun comes in building a base with walls, traps, etc. Although the little cubes you build with are difficult to collect in big numbers because they are so small, you can start by ransacking the market places for walls. I got used to building pretty quickly and had a watch tower over our farm in about 30 minutes.
With 16 things growing (twice the allowable amount), the attacks were not that bad. Two people could easily see them off.
If you fancy more of a go next week, building a base around the farm would be the best thing to do - although some experimentation will be required as I've only barely touched on that.

yeah it did look like the tower defence sort of elements would be good fun especially with some flexibility to make our own traps and weapons using the construction options so i think that would be worth a go

I think getting the resources isn't bad. It's just slow to start with. I was interested in the "grind" feedback that pointed out a few areas I felt were taking the piss: glue and oil. Both underwater and respawn times are large. I hope the devs sort that.

I played a bit with defences I've had some success with various crushers. I found while drills and saws dont seem to damage the robots they do seem to scare them so you can use them to keep robots away from your walls. This doesn't keep them away if there is nowhere for them to go they will eventially attack near drills bit you can use them to funnel the robots into a set of defenses and it seems stop them heading round the sides
this seems to work even if the drills are not powered. So I build an wall lined with drills with an openning with two walls that came in from either side on automated sensors this was ok so long as left a sort of slot in the crusher wall so they didn't trigger the sensors themselves. I was going to figure out a way round that with logic but I found the horizontal crusher tended to jam on the parts of the destroyed robots so worked once then got clogged up.
I decided to install a top down crusher but this when testing pushed me through the world and a wave of robots destroyed most of my sensors and logic before I died and respawned.
I swapped it for this which is just triggered by a switch and it works pretty well. I had to add the rim around otherwise sometimes robots climbed on top whole their brethren were being squished.
Here's the early prototype

Decided to try taking on a warehouse and found out you need to kill a red killer death bot to get an access pass to get in. Sometimes you find those bots at the warehouses. Spent ages tooling round looking for one but eventually found one at a distant warehouse. They are tough to takedown even with the spud gun I went through a whole rack of 50 ammo at least maybe more. Normal haybots take 5 shots. Eventually killed it got the card but it was getting late so I headed back to base. Figure I'll reload grow some more ammo and then try the warehouse nearer my base.

Congrats, EMW! Having seen your base, I 'll admit being super impressed! Now we need a wall, let's make it circular...

Got round to doing the warehouse and found a few things the places are full of blue tape bots with their one shot kill tape guns. Most of the time if you move carefully keep at range and snipe them you can one shot them with the spud gun. When I got to the fourth level I got killed when two of them hit me at once. I'd parked my bed car near by so it was a short walk back but I'd forgotten to fill the chest on the vehicle with extra spuds so my spud gun ammo was all on my corpse.
This started a cycle of running my way through the factory up all the levels then getting killed again when I got to my corpse. In the end I managed to hammer them and get my stuff back I sneaked on and encountered the red explosive bots and a gaggle of tape bots. The explosive bots seem to actually do less damage than the blue ones but they do take out the environment blowing holes in thing. A few deaths and repeated treks later I finished the warehouse picked up my loot the precious broccoli and pineapple seeds. I went up to the roof where you get a lovely view.
Its a tense and stressful trip up the warehouse but fairly fun although ensure you have a bunch of spare ammo in your car for deaths.
Heres the view from the top

I found my defences had a bit of a flaw I was growing a reasonable number of pineapples and broccoli and so triggers a higher level response than I normally get this included tape bots with their ranged weapons. They shot the seat I had that had the control connections for the crusher and then they swarmed in as I'd left my entrance area with a lip I could jump up onto and haybots can get up there (tonebots not so much) so I got overwhelmed and had to try and kill them hand to hand since my ammo was all in my corpse bag. I got through it without too much loss a few crops my cow and a couple of holes in the walls. I added a shield I can rotate into place on my crusher to prevent them getting in that way and then added defensive windscreen to protect me and my seat from tape bot attacks.
I've not done such a large crop since then those crops take a long time to grow and I'm out of fertilizer I might have to go and get some from the trader and see about doing another big run. I also need to retool my auto waterer as it doesn't cover a very large area due to only having the one controller for both the x and y directions. Still it was a sign I'd gotten complacent as normal attacks even larger ones with four or five haybots were no issue but adding the tape bot tipped the balance.

hmmm windscreens are not that durable. I swapped it out for some armoured glass but even that tended to get destroyed under tape bot attack
I farmed enough broccoli to get the spud shotgun very powerful up close

I made a fuel free tree cutting vehicle using bearing power on the wheels and the cutters which worked pretty well the main downside I've found beyond the cost of upgrading the controller to get enough power is the jerkyness at low speed.
Because it's spinning the bearings 360 degrees and looping to provide motion it stops them at the nearest 0 degree point THis is fine for rolling out and about but when you want to position things precisely it becomes tricky as it will roll forward or back to the nearest whole number of degrees jolting you forward or backward by quite a bit. I've tried a few ways to get round this adding less than 360 but so far that hasn't worked reliably and you loose a lot of power. Maybe having multiple "gears" would work a controller that does less to allow fine maneuvering and a main drive for going about.
I'm not sure if the piston engines would exhibit the same sort of issue I think not depending on the number of rotation points the only one I built was 2 pistons and a very janky thing.
Still a it is possible to have a vehicle with tools that can run around with no fuel

I love reading these through! I can't believe that your base "fell" under the pressure. It looked solid to me. Still, at least the game spanked you in a way that was internally consistent. I like that. You can now design for the Tapebots by protecting the seat or keep the farming level low until you're ready. That's a cool way to play. On one hand you have a fair amount of control and on the other, it can still surprise you.
Submitted by brainwipe on Tue, 2020-06-02 11:49
normally I'd have crushed the haybots before they could have gotten in so I hadn't seen them climb that lip before but since the tapebot took out the control and killed me they had a lot more time to try climbing that entrance. It was a case of suddenly encountering a completely new type of threat. Tapebots always stay at range so the crusher can't get them I guess you need to pick them off with guns.
Not sure what would happen if the explosive bots turned up or the killer reds. I expect the explosive bots would just destroy the base unless you could get to them first the red death machines would be an even bigger challenge

There is a new update in beta testing that has some good balance changes you get more oil and glue clams when harvesting and also you can now craft fertilizer with spare seeds. Also now a chemical container is available not sure what that's for beyond storing chemical.
Looks like a good set of balance adjustments hopefully it will go fully live soon (you can select it in the steam beta system if you want)
