I'm a little sceptical on this one. It's based on an excellent book I read a couple of years ago, and I would recommend any geek/nerd/engineer to read it. Trust me, you'll love it.
It's not too much of a spoiler (as it pretty much says it in the trailer) to say that the book is a diary of an astronaut stranded on Mars, and how he copes with survival. It's a true geek's book (and I haven't really said that about a book since Snow Crash)...however, I really can't see it transferring over to the film medium that well, as it's simply not an action-based book.
I'll still go and watch it, but I have a bad feeling that it might be another Jurassic Park (another great geek-book for mathematicians, ruined by an action film).
Review by Chris Hadfield (astronaut) of the book;
"A book I just couldn’t put down! It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy…reads like MacGyver meets Mysterious Island."

+1 on recommending the book, it's fantastic.
Alright alright. Desperate to see it
yeah great book the audio book version is also excellent. Want to see the film but have my doubts about Damon as Whatney still other than that it's a fantastic cast.
Here's a great interview with the author of the book
