I see Evolve is out this week (tomorrow I believe) a new game from the left4dead people
looks like it might make for a fun sunday game but it obviously costs money and it's a full priced game
It's 4 vs 1 with 4 human hunters each with their own role vs one monster who has to evade them and grow stronger looks like it could be fun to play

I think getting everyone to buy a full-price game on Launch may not be viable.
Are there any actual reviews of it yet? I thought that the Beta got slated generally, and it needed a lot of work to make it enjoyable?
I'm keen on the idea but agree with Pete. I don't buy these days without there being a review or two.
The reviews I've seen so far (all preliminary as it seems there has been no review code) look promising
we shall see as it shakes out I guess balance will be key in this sort of game and asymetric is notoriously difficult.
Still the l4d people have managed that before
I'm sceptical on a few things, and would need to see how the community cope with them;
1) Player Death - good chance that a player from the hunter team can die early on, and be left watching for a prolonged period (a bit like Counter Strike, only there at least there was a maximum round time). I haven't actually seen a review state a typical time for a game round...if it's ½-1 hour+, it's going to suck dying early on. adding in a respawn of sorts, on the other hand, sort of makes it a bit pointless/non-threatening early on for them.
2) Gimps - L4D had a number of places where a particular special could do a particular action, and Instant a character (Chargers/Cliffs, for example).
3) Why are they not selling a 5-pack? Seriously?
4) Favourite Character syndrome - I assume you have to have one of each class, or at least no uniques. Chances are 1 character class is easier/better/preferable to the others, so there will be a battle to grab that one....L4D quite wisely made all players equal (and yet they still all jump for the sword, and get annoyed when they don't get it).
5) Yay...buy game, then grind to unlock the game you paid for. Or pay more, and unlock it faster. It's F2P models in a FULL PRICE RELEASE!!
6) Balancing the game for random grouping and friend-groups - on the theory that "the hunters must work together, or they suck", how do you balance the game so that match-made groups (who may not have communications running) can work effectively? Again, looking at L4D, if you were not on voice, you were basically dead as soon as a Smoker got you (and be honest, when you were the Smoker, you went for the guy who you knew had no voice-comms first...or the bot).
So yeah...nice game in principle, looks super pretty...lets see how it works once it gets into the hands of bastards and fucktards (aka most gamers).
I'm going to give it a miss as its being heavily advertised for the Xbox, console port usually means bad!
the vast majority of games are console ports these days unless they are indie games of some stripe it's been that way for years now
The sort of micropayment get more hunters nonsense is a bit bad but then it seems all the games are trying that lark these days
As a side note, Interstellar Marines is free to play this week, it might just about be free long enough for us to give it a go on Sunday.
Having read a few reviews of Evolve, I like the concept of it, however it sounds like it needs some patches to make it workable...also, it needs to not be £35!
THIRTY FIVE POUNDS. I'm with Pete on this. Looks cool but I want a sale.
Planets have aligned. Pete and Rob have agreed. The Apolocalypse is on its way.
Unfortunately it would have to be about £5 for me, I just can't see myself getting much more value than that out of it. I too like the idea, but I don't see that much game there.
I think it's better/worse than that.
It looks like an OK concept for a Co-Op game, and once it's been patched/tweaked, it will probably be OK (it obviously has lots of comparisons to L4D, and if that is it's aim thats no bad thing).
On the downside, pretty much every review says "play it with your friends", so that's 5x the cost. To put it in perspective, Artemis cost £40 to play with all your friends, but all your friends play for free! Evolve would currently cost £175 for a game-full. That dog, my friend, simply will not fly.
Good point, well made.
For more budget friendly co-op action see humble's weekly bundle here
Any takers?
I have to admit the 4 bundles for $30 could work quite well for us?
Seems sensible... I'm happy to chip in for the $30 pack...
It seemed worth it just on the off chance it could work for Sundays so I have grabbed a $30 pack ... now I just need to figure out email addresses to gift them, but that shouldn't be too hard to sort out.
Humble links sent to Rob & Pete.
Matt, given you seem to have a universal licence to call games, do you already own these or would you like the last pack?
FYI, no charge for these, I just enjoy the gaming!
I think I've got half of them already
And sent; all that is left now is to decide what to play.
Any one want to give Forced a go this week?
Sounds good to me. Currently got them all downloading...
Thanks mate! Will get them downloading now.
So Forced looked like it might have been fun if not for piss poor networking that became super laggy the moment enemies were introduced (I had a look on their steam forums mentions something about not supporting wifi connections or some bollocks)
Damned looked interesting except no one had any clue how to play. I was the monster and existed in a sort of other realm from the players so I couldn't see them unless I went into the physical world and then I was too slow to catch them. I was supposed to set traps that would let me know where they were so I could pop up and kill them but had no clue what to do. So I ended up popping into the world at random then looking for flash lights. Also it was really low frame rate even turned way down (all the options off the res set to 1280*1024) though when i tried it again just now it was ok so must have been transitory error. The other team similarly didn't know what to do. Could have promise and it was hilarious hearing rob shitting himself every time I went into the physical world and the music went all sinister.
Hammerwatch was pretty good fun like a 2d gauntlet without dual stick controls wizard is awesome. We played that a fair bit and had some good fun there.
Interesting about the wifi...from the conversation I think I was getting less lag than the rest of you on Forced, and I am using wifi...may be it's all my fault.
Damned was probably the most frustrating...after getting past the "FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T PUT IT IN FULLSCREEN MODE, OR IT WILL NEVER WORK AGAIN"...there were obviously enough issues with not coping with settings that in the game folder there is a batch file that will reset all your settings to default (if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have even been in there).
Hammerwatch was a good laugh, though I'd strongly recommend not playing a melee character, as you go down pretty quick once you start getting hit.
I'm with the above. I'd give Damned another go (with knowledge). It really was fucking scary seeing EMW turn up; especially in the dying light when you're turning your torch on and off. I did totally crap myself when playing it.
I liked what I played of Hammerwatch. Sorry for backing out, Mrs was having a "dark moment" (she suffers from depression). I think I might have been a helpful priest for melee backup because the heal ray is pretty powerful.
