So in time for GDC UE4 just got released and it's now a subscription model 19 dollars a month for full access to the engine and all the tools and help on pc mac ios and android. they have also made it all C++ rather that some pansy scripting language. If you then make a game you can sell it for a 5% cut to epic and they have their own store back end that integrates to simplify the process.
This is also hot on the heels of Unity announcing their Unity5 engine and I've been quite fond of unity for it's simplicity and from the details of Ue4 epic have learnt from that model a fair amount. The two are obviously going head to head for the indie market I think unity's initial free model is still a bit more attractive but 19 dollars a month is cheap enough to attract a lot and this is the full blown engine unity pro is something like 75 dollars a month or 1500 one off and that only includes the PC stuff if you want android ios etc it's another 1500 or 75 bucks a month for each.
The demos show some really fabulous looking graphics so it will hopefully lead to some really good looking games in the near future and with it being more accessible to indie devs more nice looking indie games.
