I appreciate Gabe is a good artist, however you can buy an original Andy Warhol for the same amount. I appreciate some adverts can be annoying, but the monies being asked here is a tad...gratuitous. I'm not really a great art-lover, but I think that the Warhol will have more long-term cultural value than a PA original (feel free to rub this in my face in 80 years, when originals by Gabe are sold at Sotheby's for insane amounts, though if you ask me you're pretty fucked up rubbing a picture in a dead guys face. You weird sick freak)...
A better model, I would have thought, would be along the lines of BoardGameGeek...if you find the adverts instrusive then you can pay a yearly subscription to remove them.
That said, they will probably achieve their goal, if for no other reason that as a pair (and by extension the company they have created) have done great work fostering a decent community, supporting their readers, and generally being a voice for gamers in a society where as a hobby it can be mis-understood.
Personally, I'd prefer to support them by purchasing their merchandise...if they could only get round to having a UK reseller...dealing with international shipping is a right royal PITA.

Their larger rewards are...interesting
Buy a picture for $25,000?
