A very interesting project Tim Schafer of Monkey Island, Day of the tentacle, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and more recently Brutal Legend and Stacking put forward a project on crowd funding site Kickstarter to do a modern adventure game and documentary of the making for 400k with a deadline of march 13th to achieve the funding goal.
In 24h they've managed to get nearly double that 794k dollars and still rising which shows for the right project you don't need publishers anymore.

I find my self wanting to pledge large sums of money ... what could possibly go wrong?
It's a great idea...there are plenty of games designers out there I would like to see kick out a new game (current faves Demigod and SC2 for example). Demigod is a great example...a good game commercially killed by piracy...
They burnt their bridges a little with demigod as it was broken as fuck on the first release a year or so ago . I gather the steam rerelease was much better but after taking money once for a severely broken product it's hard to get people to pay again.
They're up to over a million dollars in just 24h pretty crazy.
Kickstarter projeccts are always a bit speculative you are giving over money with no garantee the guy on the other end has any idea what they are doing in this case I would suspect since we've seen examples of both double fine and 2player productions work (they did PATV season one) that they'll at least do something interesting for the money even if the game is a bust.
