They're not really sitting on this stuff it just takes a long time for something like this to become a commercial practical usable technology. Things like this are often decades away from practical application all sorts of road blocks pop up as soon as you try and actually use this tech in the real world
Like most of the things you see about new research tech this was a one off made in a lab by a team of people who worked on it for an extended period of time. For it to be used in the real world we would need to be able to churn it out fast cheap and reliably and without any of the hand tweaking that was no doubt involved in this that with solving any of the myriad of long term problems it might have.
It's just a fact of life that this stuff built in a laboratory is a long way from something that can be used in real life.
