hmmm even this is using physics cheats to work notice the action of the piston is always parrallel to the minecart not direct it's just bascially substituting a minecart in the form of a booster for a piston.
It's a neater package tho so a good thing but I wonder how much of it will actually make it to the official version if it's still a cheat

There are powered rails coming as well, though Notch has said current boosters will still work.

Pistons and powered rails will make my life a lot easier and satisfy my OCD when it comes to tidying stuff up.
EMW - Although it is a client mod, it's still Java and like the lighting update, notch used the 'cheat' code as a basis for the new feature.
I'm looking forward to the API. No idea what I might want to do with it, though.

I'm just saying it's another physics hack and one that still requires a load of booster carts to work
maybe they will fix that or maybe powered tracks will render it obsolete

From the video it does seem as though the piston will merely be an easier way of triggering a current booster (rather than the complex door mechanisms that Matt has been using).
The big key to any new "official" booster will be if it can quickly increase the internal speed of a minecart well above the 8m/s externall limit that the current physics trick does. If you have to have constantly powered rails in order to keep speed then people simply won't use them (I don't really fancy replacing the entire Cross Country track with gold rails and redstone torches), whereas if you can have (for example) a 10-long section of power track that enables a cart to move another 100-150 squares at full speed then it becomes more viable as an alternative.
There is also a rail-detector section coming, which effectively will work as an in-line pressure pad. I'm really hoping that this can differentiate between empty and full carts, as I'd like to add in empty cart removers to long tracks, to stop them getting blocked up by stray vehicles.

oOOOooh. Pete has mundo informatico! Didn't know anything about those.
Gold track seems very expensive for those not using /giveme. Gold is far too rare to make contiguous powered tracks remotely useful. You'd never mine enough gold to build any decent length - you might as well walk! They simply must act as booster sections.
Rail detectors also sound good.
Do powered carts work yet? I've not tried but have a feeling they do not.

an inline pressure pad would be great currently you have to break the track to do that which means multiplee boosters are needed to carry the carts over these dead sections for empty cart detection to work and even then sometimes the carts come off the tracks
gold while not that common is currently useless you can accumulate a lot of it digging deep and currently it's not worth cluttering you inventory with even if you don't have /giveme

whats the schedule for rhe powered track and the pressure plate I know piston coming sometime after 1.5 hopefully 1.6

According to the wiki, and Notch's updates it's all in 1.5, which will be early next week...

MC 1.5 is also removing the ability to climb ladders with gaps. I foresee some trees being hacked down!
