Monday Night Combat

Right - just pre-purchased Monday Night Combat on steam for the princely sum of £9 and as part of the pre-purchase you get access to the Beta. Rock on \m/

Game launches you straight into the tutorial which is useful - standard FPS controls except Q E and shift activate class specific skills (i think)

It essentially boils down to a 3rd person FPS (3ps?), with a similar class based system to TF2 - you kill stuff, earn money and then upgrade your abilities in game with said cash, earning different cash after battles which can so far only unlock custom classes (haven't got there yet - i assume similar to the equipment loadout in alien swarm). Each class gets exclusive abilities and weapons.
The fun part is that at the same time as all of that, you are playing tower defence. there are robot bots on each side aiming for the opposing teams tower, aim of the game is to fuck it up so helping them along is a good thing. The arena has a load of nodes that you can spend in-battle cash to put turrets/robot bot upgrades/turret upgrades on - they are open to both teams so sneaking one into the other teams base has hilarious results as they spawn and die repeatedly in quick succession :)

Single player mode is pretty much the tower defense part without the offensive edge.

Servers seem good so far, but i guess it is still beta so will wait for launch on that one

in summary; buy it now and lets get multiplayer running. It is really really awesome XD

Now I'm back from the work trip, this is on the top of my buy list. Let's multiplay the crap out of this.

As well you know I have already purchased this and firmly intend to lose a significant portion of the weekend to it's charms.

This is a bloody good laugh! Thanks for the top tip, Jon (it is Jon, isn't it?)!

brainwipe's picture

yup tis indeed - really liking assassin at the minute - we've found some issues with server creation and a massive lack of options but im giving it the benefit of the doubt as a beta release and guessing this should be fixed come next weeks rollout...

EarlGrey's picture

I've given them an equal go - quite like support and Assassin but can't get on a server atm. Much like you, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

On Blitz I've had most success with Gunner and Assault, though it's really getting a feel for the special moves. Snipe sucks in Blitz, so not had much time to work on how the traps and flak work...

The server stuff does need sorting out. Fixed numbers (4 or 12) and now way of starting a game before the match is full is crazy!

gunner is pretty good on crossfire too - just remember to do the ground slam or jetpack jump as soon as you see an assasin and you're golden :)

EarlGrey's picture

Yeah...jetpack jumps are good on both classes. Slams/grapples I keep forgetting about. I should probably move them to mouse buttons.

Tank has a good anti-assassin as well, a massive sweep with some sort of energy sword.

babychaos's picture

My "Support" success came from scurrying along behind a wall of robots, keeping them alive. We managed to get into the core doing that. Sadly, I was very vulnerable to assassins.

brainwipe's picture

I concur, bags of potential there. Just needs a bit of buff n polish especially in the realm of multiplayer options.

Fav class so far is the assassin, although support has some tasty options as well. I'll suck at it some more this week whilst other hobbies take a back seat. :)

Nibbles's picture

I'm not around tonight, but will be up for some Tuesday Night Combat if people are around.

Fingers crossed the full release sorts out the server options..

babychaos's picture

Should be, unless my neck dramatically improves overnight.

Nibbles's picture

Tuesday i'll be out getting my groove on on the dancefloor but i imagine i'll catch some of you on there at some point during the week - assassin tip - if you start hammering jump as soon as you go into the smoke bomb animation you get a massive faux rocket jump and you can recloak midair too - lovely way of avoiding vengeance for the bloke you have just stabbed in the face :)

EarlGrey's picture

Can't make Tuesday because I'll be trying to keep a roleplaying plot from crashing into the ground.

brainwipe's picture

Statistically, you'll have more chance of avoiding that if you aren't there.

babychaos's picture

I had a check go last night before heading out...couldn't see any chanes to server setup unfortunately. Shall invest more tonight...

babychaos's picture

I'll be about... Failing to do the smoke bomb trip with the assassin.

Nibbles's picture

ok just had a big patch applied - will read the notes later :)

EarlGrey's picture

They have sort of fixed the server...you now have a Ready status (if the button decides to appear), and when everyone is ready the timer goes down to ~13 seconds.

No idea if this is also in Crossfire, as Nibbles and myself did some Blitz last night to get him upto earning a Custom Class...

babychaos's picture

We also proved that I can't snipe. At all.

Blitz is ok, although crossfire is clearly where it's at. Will be buggering about with that later in the week.

Nibbles's picture

Yeah...you really can't snipe...the defining proof of that was watching you fire an entire clip at the gaps in a swarm of bots coming towards me...

babychaos's picture

It's the scope! I am shocking with scopes... My fav gun in L4D2 is the military sniper and I don't even have the scope key mapped!

MNC - All it lacks is a flak cannon (and decent, non-irritating multiplayer set up).

Nibbles's picture

sniper is fairly useless against bots, and they dont seem to turn up in the meta all that often...far as i can tell they are fairly effective against players though...

EarlGrey's picture

They aren't amazing vs bots, but do have some tricks. The explosive rounds can take out 5+ bots in one shot, given they group so nicely, and flak does a lot of damage. The slo-mo trap is a bit poo I reckon, takes too long to trigger.
