This is the second of these cases that I've heard of recently the other was a that woman here in the UK who refused a transfusion for the same reasons after giving birth and died.
This is just as tragic some poor brainwashed kid who basically committed suicide by religious reasoning. If there was any justice the people who convinced him that this crazy doctrine thing was the way to go would be done for murder by meme.
From what I've read the blood thing with Jehovahs witnesses is a modern reinterpretation of their beliefs in 1945 and not everyone in this outfit supports this part of their ideology. It comes from highly dubious readings of sections of their special book.
How they can assume it was talking about blood transfusions since the first successful blood transfusions didn't take place till the 19th century with various (often fatal) experiments dating back to the 15th century. Still a long long way after the special book was printed on mount wotsit by Charlton Heston and the stone tablets. They didn't even really understand what blood was back then, they had some idea it was important due to experiments in stabbing people.
What with the teddy thing where it sounds like an angry mob will lynch that woman any day now religion seems to be racking up it's traditional body count. I know we're all supposed to be tolerant of peoples beliefs and that but where do you draw the line when those beliefs increasingly seem to lead to death.
