This halo looks like a poor UT2004. Oooooh, rocket launcher, really? A launcher? Of rockets? How cool was that in 1995? I've always though halo was a poor cousin of PC shooters of their time. The only cool thing about it was the setting, which wasn't really used.
Imagine a JC2 grapnel in a ring world... a really long one, natch.

Yeah I've never been that impressed with Halo. I know i some circles saying that is tantamount to heresy. It's ok I suppose but it does nothing special it's a by the numbers fps game with cookie cutter plot ripped off from the greatest hits of sci fi.
Just cause 2 grapple hook on ring world with red faction guerrilla's geomod tech and crackdowns upgradable super powers ... now that would be a game :D

Halo did three things of note in my mind:
It proved that console FPSs don't need to be shite. They're never going to be as good as PC ones, but Halo was pretty playable on the xbox, and no previous console FPS could say that.
It made me feel like a badass. Barrelling into a room, taking out a big alien with a couple of headshots (or better yet, a sticky plasma grenade,) and seeing his little friends scatter and hide shrieking "Run! He's gonna kill us all!" pretty much never gets old. That blatant pandering to the players ego might not make it a better game, but it sure as hell makes it more fun. :)
The Warthog.

I'd argue with point one there had been things like Time Splitters that predate halo and were pretty good FPS's and with dual shock which I think is still one of the better control pad designs it was fast frantic and good fun.

Typically, I disagree with everything you say. :)
Never really rated Timesplitters (or Goldeneye or Perfect Dark for that matter,) and I've always thought the PS controllers were pretty terrible; I'd take the gamecube controller or the 360 one over it any day. But point taken; it's not universally acknowledged that Halo was the first good console FPS. I'm sure there's someone somewhere who didn't like the warthog as well (although that was blatantly ripped off from Hostile Warters on the PC, anyway.)
The other thing Halo did, of course, was crush the hopes of Mac owners everywhere - I'm sure that will be popular on here. ;)

Naturally :D
I guess since those were all made by the same outfit in various guises Rare -> Free Radical that's not that surprising :D Although their most recent attempt Haze was bloody awful. I never played Goldeneye or perfect dark since I didn't have an n64 I know a lot of people rave about them.
PS2 had quite a lot of fps' that showed up before the xbox I remeber red faction had a split screen deathmatch mode that me and my house mate at the time had endless fun with using the geomod to tunnel away into the walls then burst out unexpectedly or ignore killing each other and try and destroy the entire level completely. Of course that was a pretty poor single player game a one trick pony with some serious bugs in it.
I've always found the button layout much more natural on the dual shock2 controller (tho they've modified it a tad for sixaxis and dualshock 3 with the trigger addition which throws it a bit off) I find on a 360 controller my natural grip is to use my index fingers on the triggers so to hit the bumpers I have to shift grips it's something to do with the tension in the triggers and the usual fast action required on them it just feels a lot more usable with my index fingers. Gamecube controller was ok tho the second analogue stick had a slightly weird design to it.
Oh anything that crushes mac users hopes must be good, isn't the current enemy flash :D

I know what you mean about the triggers on the 360 controller, I just find I use the bumper buttons so infrequently that it's not a big problem for me. The problem I have with the sixaxis (and every previous PS controller since dual shock is the analogue stick location; they basically took the original playstation controller, bolted a couple of analogue sticks on the bottom and called it done. The D-Pad is still in a more natural thumb position than the stick, despite the fact that every game in the last two console generations was designed for analogue control (except the occasional fighting game.) The gamecube and 360 both do this right, with the left analogue stick right under the thumb, and the action buttons opposite it under the other thumb.
Flash is certainly *an* enemy, but I don't think it's doing a lot of crushing right now; more hammering on the door, alternately begging to be let in, and threatening to call the cops if it isn't.
Adobe is certainly in a position to do a lot of damage if they get so pissed-off that they don't release Creative Suite on the Mac any more, but I think they're still a long way from that. They get about half their sales from Mac users, and not all of them would follow to another platform.
Actually, I think the thing doing the most Mac-user crushing at the moment is Apple themselves.

I don't know it could just be hand shape thing but I find the analogue stick positioning on dual shock just right. Having said that I don't have any problem using the 360 analogue sticks.
I was reading some more on the bungie deal with activision and it seemed a bit odd a straight up publishing deal no ip tranfer or ownership just and agreement to publish the title but it's a 10 year contract not a one game or what ever which would suggest maybe an MMO or something of that ilk. Activision being fused with blizard it would seem that helping set up an MMO would be their bag. It's odd the turn about recently it used to be EA was the enemy and activision the hero Infinty ward was after all founded by people from 2015 running away from EA for more control now respawn has done similar things for the same reasons and run back to EA.
While in someways I can see that eradicating flash is a good thing for the web and given some of the cool things HTML5 can do I can see it's functionality being replaced with that eventually. It just seems odd making a tablet that cant view the all of the web, I mean fair enough a smart phone like the iphone they are limited small devices universal compatibility is impossible on a device like that and indeed isn't needed but on a tablet pc very odd. Some of apples arguments against flash are quite comical arguing about how closed systems are bad when their systems are arguably even more closed. Adobe and macs have always been closely associated hell it used to be if you wanted to use their products you needed a mac the pc versions only showing up later on the proceedings it seems a bit odd now they are at each others throats. But all of that's another argument :D

To further waylay the conversation, Intel announced a new version of Atom for smartphones yesterday. Supposed to have comparable power consumption to the current standards, and considerably more punch...
In the spirit of Byrn's threadjack I'd like to say I like badgers.

Which once again begs the question... Which is madder, a bag of badgers or a bag of squirrels?

I think squirrels are madder, but badgers are awesomer.
Submitted by AggroBoy on Fri, 2010-05-07 12:22
yes but you get less badgers per bag than squirrels so the awesomeness to madness ratio is different

I have a (now unavailable) first gen logitech G15. It's crap for typing on, but has an extremely useful bank of 18 programmable buttons down the left side, and since I only use that machine for gaming, the rubbish key motion isn't much of a problem.
It also has an extraordinarily pointless LCD display on it. :)
