It would be interesting to see the anti-GM brigade in on this one, as it could potentially hit far closer to home if the current banana species were to be taken out by a disease, as previously. It's all very well whining about GM when it's being used "evilly" (their words, not mine) to improve yields, resistance to diease etc etc, however what if it is potentially the only way to save a staple food type from extinction?

Good point about the GM. It is an excellent case for selective breeding. I do love a banana!
